Books That Impacted Me

Shepherding Your Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp is a wonderful book on parenting.  It challenges readers to not just train the behavior, but to train the heart.  It also challenges parents to look at their own hearts and pushes us all to examine our own sin, repent from that sin, and then turn toward our Savior in obedience and joy as we accept His grace and mercy.  The only hole in this book that I can see is that it is does not present how to deal with children who are disabled and are not able to understand.

Tramp for the Lord by Corrie Ten Boom.  Corrie Ten Boom is one of the women in history that has made a huge impact on my spiritual life.  This book is the last in a chronicle of 3 books that depict the story of her family life (In My Father’s House), her time in a Nazi prison camp (The Hiding Place) and finally the book Tramp for the Lord which depicts her life after being released from the prison camp and how she traveled the world telling her story and sharing the Gospel.  Corrie’s family were believers in Christ who hid Jews in their home in Holland during WWII.  The people they hid escaped, but Corrie’s family was taken prisoner.  She amazed me with her stories of great faith, prayer and her boldness to both go where ever the Holy Spirit told her to go and the proclaim the Truth of Jesus to everyone. I just love Corrie Ten Boom!  She was definitely a “Radical Woman”!!!

Whether it is cancer, hurricanes, or death, one thing is certain….no one escapes life without pain and problems.  Knowing God is in control and that all things happen for God’s Glory and our good is the theme in this book. Even if we don’t “see” the reasons behind our trial, that doesn’t mean there is no purpose.

SAFELY HOME by Randy Alcorn

This is a fictional book that tells the story of a wealthy American business man who is forever changed after visiting his old college roommate who is a Chinese citizen, while the American is visiting China.  The American discovers the realities of the persecuted church and what it really means to love the Lord your God with ALL your HEART, ALL your SOUL and ALL your MIND.

Mueller and Taylor were both great men of prayer…and God reveals His ways in amazing answers.

Mueller rescues orphans in England and Taylor in the first to establish churches in Inland China.  Both were scoffed at and thought to be fools among most Christians of their day, yet both boldly obeyed the promptings of the Holy Spirit and saw amazing results!

UNCLE TOM”S CABIN by Harriet Beecher Stowe (fiction)

An unbelievable and moving story of a slave who loves Jesus and how his faithfulness to his Lord impacts the lives of everyone he meets.  It also displays the dark side of slavery.  You will wince, cry and be deeply moved.

ELSIE DINSMORE series of books by Martha Finley (fiction) The new Life of Faith version.

This is a series of books that take you through the life of a girl from age 8 through death. This series take place during the civil war era and were written around the early 1800’s.  They were second in popularity to Louisa May Alcott (author of Little Women) during the time that the authors were living.  Elsie exemplifies Proverbs 31.  She is a great example for young girls and women alike.
